Psalm 4 – Kansas basketball is wor…is worth…is worthl…I can’t say it

For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; be gracious to me and hear my prayer. O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach? How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception?
Selah.
But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; the LORD hears when I call to Him. Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still.
Selah.
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the LORD. Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?” Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD! You have put gladness in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety.

What do you love that is worthless? What goals do you have that will not bring fulfillment? I always made the joke that the top three priorities in my life are 1) God, 2) Family, and 3) Kansas basketball. While people usually laugh when I say that it’s not far off from the truth. I probably value Kansas basketball (and sports/competition in general) more highly than I should. I am not at a place where I am willing to say that my love for Kansas basketball is worthless, but I will say that I need to constantly check myself that I am not giving a higher place in my life than it deserves. (Quick moment to brag. I got tickets last week to the 2010 Midwest regional final in St. Louis, floor seats on the corner behind the basket. Oh yeah!!!)

There is something in your life that you tend to love too much. I don’t know what it is, but you can probably figure it out. Odds are this thing that you love is not worthless and it has some value, but you need to be sure that you do not consider more valuable than you should.

In all we do we need to spend time meditating on the Lord and seeking his guidance for our lives. God will reveal our weaknesses if we have the courage to ask. We need to trust in the Lord, not in Kansas basketball. Kansas basketball will disappoint (except for 1953, 1988, 2008, and next year); God will always put gladness in our hearts.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
