Psalm 1 – Planting yourself
I’m not going to blog all the way through Psalms in one go. The book of Psalms is divided into five books; I’ll be blogging on a book at a time. The first book is comprised of chapters 1-41.
“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
I like the imagery that meditating on the Lord is like planting yourself beside a stream of water. This stream of living water feeds and nurtures the disciple. This stream enables us to produce fruit and not wither.
It is when we plant ourselves away from the stream of living water that we run into problems. If we fail to meditate on the Lord then we “walk in the counsel of the wicked…stand in the path of sinner…sit in the seat of scoffers”.
At the end of the day we will all be influenced by someone; will that person be God, the provider of living water, or something, which will ultimately lead to evil, sin, and failure.
