Exodus 20 – Self made barriers to God

God provides the people a covenant by which they might remain faithful. God begins with “You shall have no other gods before me”, and through ten commandments works through the various ways the people can place obstacles between themselves and God.

But when the people hear the commands of God they tell Moses to speak to them, “let not God speak to us, or we will die.”

We do not need an intermediary to speak to God, but sometimes out of fear we place people between us and God. We seek out a pastor, a holy person, or mentor and we ask them to speak to God for us. Now there is nothing wrong with asking others to pray with us or for us, but when we ask others to go to God in our place we are putting an unnecessary and unhealthy barrier between ourselves and God.
