Genesis 27 – Please sir, may I have some more?

Rebekah and Jacob trick Isaac into blessing Jacob with the firstborn blessing that Isaac had reserved for Esau. This same blessing had previously been sold to Jacob by Esau for a bowl of soup. Up until this point the blessing does not seem to be an important thing in the eyes of Esau. But, after he is tricked out of receiving his blessing, “Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself, ‘The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

Too often I am as short sighted as Esau. I hold in contempt the things that will ultimately be worth while I hold in high regard the things that will quickly pass and be worthless. I need to pray daily that God would realign my priorities and set my heart on the things of lasting value. I need to not sacrifice a bowl of soup today for the blessings God has in store for me tomorrow.
