The very first act of King Hezekiah’s reign is to reopen the temple and purify it from defilement. Hezekiah has realized that he needs to renew his peoples covenant with God and realign the community to God’s will. In all it took sixteen days for the Levites to rid the temple of defilements and purify it. Then Hezekiah rededicates the temple and announces that the nation will once again celebrate passover. Unfortunately, Passover must be delayed for a month because not enough priests could be made pure in time.
Hezekiah then sends out priests and levities to take their rightful place among the people so that the sacrificial offerings required by God could recommence. These offerings had not been observed for several generations. “In all that he did…Hezekiah sought his God wholeheartedly. As a result, he was very succesful.” (2 Chr 31:21)
At some point in each of our lives we reach a place where we look at our own souls and realize that they need to be purified. We need to recenter ourselves on Christ so that we can be put to the uses God has intended for us. Hezekiah is a wonderful example for us; we need to evaluate our life and our family and make sure that we are seeking god wholeheartedly.
It is easy to get distracted. It is easy to seek God with only a part of our hearts. We can become distracted by habits, and rules, and laziness. It is easier to continue doing what we have always known than it is to evaluate if we are doing what God is asking us to do. In those times when we realize that we are not following God wholeheartedly we need to strip away all the distractions and return to Jesus.
If we are not following God wholeheartedly then we need to stop what we are doing, change our habits, and reorient our lives around Christ and Christ alone. I wrote something in an email this weekend that I have been trying to meditate on: “it’s all about loving Jesus and sharing him. The rest is just us making it complicated.” If whatever you are doing is not worth the death of your Lord then you need to stop doing it.
We all need to periodically spend times purifying ourselves and reorienting ourselves to loving Jesus and sharing him with others. Clean out the rest like the levites cleaned out the temple. Take your time and do a good job. Make your actions worthy of the death of our Lord.
