God then lays out the requirements for the Sin Offerings; there are different requirements depending upon who sinned (the priest, the whole community, a leader, or a citizen). God also describes which sins require a sin offering. God then describes the Guilt Offerings and what sins require a Guilt Offering. Finally, God gives the priests some additional details on how the offerings are to be carried out.

I remember back in Old Testament 501 we had an overview lecture on the different sacrifices and what their purposes were and how they were used. I would love to pull those notes out and preach a sermon on an overview of the Old Testament sacrificial system.

A recurring them is the that the people need to make a sacrifice when they “become aware of their guilt.” It does not appear that God is trying to play “gotcha” with the Israelites. God is not be sneaking and planning on punishing them for sins of which the individual or community is not aware. God expects a sacrifice for the known sins. I would read into the text (a dangerous practice) that ultimately God will work to make us aware of our sins.
