Moses inspects the work of the people and blesses them because they have followed God’s command. The cloud which is the visible manifestation of God settles over the Tabernacle and Moses is no longer able to enter. Whenever the cloud moves the people follow it. Whenever the cloud stays in one place the people stay where they are. At night the cloud becomes a pillar of fire so that the people can always see the presence of God among them.
What would the church look like if we moved when God moved and stayed put when God stayed put. I think that the Israelites had an advantage in that they could visibly see the presence of God. Of course, we have an advantage over the Israelites because each of us has an opportunity to have a personal relationship with Christ and have the Holy Spirit dwell within us.
I think it is important for pastors to note that Moses took the time to bless the people because of their hard work. He didn’t just stand up in front and give them a hand, he blessed them. Do we ever speak a blessing over those who have been faithful? I believe it would be a helpful practice.
